Getting tech companies to address underlying structural problems

Problem

Tech companies engage and collaborate with civil society organizations and researchers; however, this is inconsistent, ad-hoc, and puts the responsibility on women and LGBTQI+ communities to protect themselves instead of addressing underlying structural problems that facilitate OGBV. Moreover, the business models of many tech companies rely on high engagement numbers that are often driven by abusive and offensive content.

Solution

We need tech companies to invest in capabilities to stop the algorithmic amplification and viral spread of abusive content, and to put users’ safety at the center of their business models and their design.

Approach

Working alongside tech companies, governments and civil society stakeholders, we need to develop prototypes and policies that prevent the spread of online abuse and establish models for long-term multi-stakeholder collaboration.

Impact

By changing the underlying structural problems that support the amplification of violence online, we prevent instances of OGBV and other abuse and harassment in the first place. This will ensure the internet is a safer space for everyone, not just women.
